About Us

Hamad Medical Corporation has been Qatar’s principal public healthcare provider for more than three decades and is dedicated to delivering the safest, most effective and compassionate care to all patients. Managing eight hospitals and operating the national Ambulance Service and a Home Healthcare Service, Hamad is building a legacy of healthcare expertise through excellence in clinical care, medical education and research. All of HMC’s hospitals, as well as the Ambulance Service and Home Healthcare Service, are accredited by the Joint Commission International, which recognizes high quality healthcare organizations.

In 2013, HMC became the first hospital system in the Middle East to achieve accreditation from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education - International (ACGME-I), which demonstrates excellence in the way medical graduates are trained through residency, internship and fellowship programs. Additionally, HMC’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is accredited by the prestigious College of American Pathologists, recognizing its positive impact on patient care. HMC plays a key role in many areas of Qatar’s National Health Strategy, including diabetes, cancer, organ transplantation and mental health. Academic health is central to HMC’s healthcare vision, which, at its heart, combines innovative research, top class education and excellent clinical care.

HMC has kept pace with the rapid growth and development of the nation in recent decades. This progress is evident in both the expansion of facilities to meet demand as well as improved quality of care. Three new state-of-the-art facilities have been opened since 2011: Al Wakra Hospital, The Cuban Hospital and Heart Hospital, and HMC is in the early stages of planning and delivery on one of the most ambitious hospital building programs currently underway anywhere in the world that will significantly expand capacity.

Hamad Hospital Services

Ambulance Service

The Ambulance Service fulfills an essential life-saving role for the people of Qatar. Every incident that the Ambulance Service is called to offers different challenges in terms of the injuries faced, the number of people affected, the location and the support required. The Ambulance Service receives more than 130,000 calls each year to which ambulance teams respond, using our fleet of ambulances, rapid response vehicles and LifeFlight helicopters. In addition to being accredited by JCI, the Ambulance Service’s Medical Communication Center was recently named an Accredited Center of Excellence (ACE).

Hamad General Hospital

Hamad General Hospital is a 600-bed facility offering highly specialized and complex care to the people of Qatar. It offers a wide range of medical care and clinical services, including trauma, emergency medicine, pediatrics, critical care, specialized and sub-specialized surgery, specialized medicine, laboratory medicine, diagnostic imaging and acute adult rehabilitation services. The hospital, which opened in 1982, provides expert inpatient care, a large outpatient department providing more than 65 specialty clinics, a highly developed Emergency Department, five intensive care units, eight operating theaters and a larger pharmacy. Modern diagnostic facilities including laboratory, medicine, pathology and radiology facilities support all therapeutic services.

The hospital manages the Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Center, which offers some of the most advanced treatment standards in the region for patients with acute and chronic kidney ailments. The high standard trauma services at HMC received World Health Organization’s (WHO) recognition and the Trauma Center has recently received the Trauma Distinction Accreditation from Accreditation Canada International (ACI). Within the Emergency Department, the use of the ‘see and treat’ model of care for less critical patients has dramatically reduced patient waiting times and enhanced the patient experience.

The National Diabetes Center opened in 2013 provides Qatar’s diabetic population with improved patient care and access to specialized services through a multi-disciplinary approach. The hospital has developed a highly regarded Robotics Surgery Program, which is one of many service offerings provided by its well established surgical department that has developed into a multi-sub-specialized surgical center of excellence. Hamad General Hospital has a strong partnership with Weill Cornell Medical School in Qatar, and around 400 residents rotate through its services yearly. We also collaborate closely with the University of Calgary to support its nursing program and many of the brightest nursing graduates join our hospital each year.

Al Khor Hospital

Al Khor Hospital provides healthcare services to the growing population in the northern region of Qatar. Officially opened in January 2012, the hospital’s Cuban medical staff services the healthcare needs of the population in the west of Qatar. Cuba’s own healthcare system is well respected around the world and the close ties with Qatar ensure the hospital provides a high level of patient-centered healthcare. The Cuban Hospital provides a full range of community general hospital physician and surgical disciplines. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has 71 beds/incubators.

Walk in Centers/ Pediatric Emergency Centers:

A National network of Walk in Centers operates across Qatar to see emergency presentations of patients with minor injury and illness. This includes two purpose built units in Hamad International Airport, a service which will expand to three clinics in the near future. These clinics allow rapid access to specialist Emergency Doctors for patients who do not need to access the larger Emergency Departments. The Pediatric Emergency Centers offer rapid access to a specialized pediatric emergency team 24 hours a day.
