Orthodontics
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Crooked teeth and teeth that do not fit together correctly are harder to keep clean, are at risk of being lost early due to tooth decay and periodontal disease, and cause extra stress on the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome and neck, shoulder and back pain. Teeth that are crooked or not in the right place can also detract from one's appearance.
The benefits of orthodontic treatment include a healthier mouth, a more pleasing appearance, and teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime.
A specialist in this field is called an orthodontist. Orthodontists receive two or more years of education beyond their four years in dental school in an ADA-approved orthodontic training program.
Gum Treatments
Gum disease is one of the two most common diseases that affect our oral cavity. This disease affects the gum and bone surrounding the teeth. The disease does not produce obvious signs and symptoms until it has progressed to an advanced stage. In all stages of gum disease, patients usually suffer from bleeding gums as a result of bacteria causing damage to the gums.
Gum specialists (Periodontists) are specially trained dentists who detect and treat the complete range of gum diseases.
What is Gum Disease?
In order to understand gum disease, we need to first understand the structures surrounding the tooth. The tooth is divided into the crown and the root. The root is surrounded by bone, which in turn is covered by gums. There is a space between the tooth and gums, called a pocket, which is present both in healthy and diseased states.
Gum disease originates from bacteria that gain entry into the pocket. When bacteria enter, they attack the gums. This causes injury to the gums, resulting in spontaneous bleeding upon touch, pain, redness, and sometimes swelling.
If bacteria hardens to form tartar, it can spread deeper towards the bone and cause the destruction of the bone and as well as the deepening of the periodontal pocket.
In the advanced stage of gum disease (periodontitis), the tooth would have so much bone lost that it becomes shaky and may drift out of position. During the later stages of gum disease, the tooth can no longer be kept and has to be extracted.
The accumulated bacteria in the infected gums can enter our blood stream to be transported to the various organs; such as the heart, kidneys, and womb; in the body. The maintenance of good oral health is paramount in controlling a series of health problems that will occur with gum disease, but having said that, it becomes a vicious cycle as it is also established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that patients afflicted with conditions such as diabetes are prone to the worsening of gum disease.
Root Canal
Root canal treatment is a procedure, which eliminates infection that has reached the nerves of the affected tooth. Signs of infection requiring root canal treatment include pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, tenderness to chewing, swelling of the gum and the discolouration of the tooth.
During root canal treatment, the infected nerves are removed and the inside of the tooth is disinfected and cleaned. It is then filled and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. The tooth is then restored with a crown or permanent filling for protection. After the final restorations, the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.
Root canal treatment eliminates pain from a badly infected tooth which otherwise has to be extracted. Saving the natural tooth will help maintain chewing efficiency and protect the other teeth from excessive wear or stress. It also helps maintain your natural smile.
Laminates and Veneers
Porcelain veneers (also referred to as dental laminates), are wafer-thin shells made out of dental ceramic that are bonded onto the front side of teeth.
They're generally about .5 to .6 mm thick. That's about 1/2 the thickness of a dime or twice the thickness of an eggshell. The reason why they are called laminate veneers is that thin porcelain layers are bonded on frontal surfaces of teeth, generally for aesthetic purposes. Laminate veneer preparation includes approximately 0,5 mm enamel depth of teeth. In some cases, the veneers are bonded with no tooth preparation involvement.
Laminate veneers cannot be applied to patients with habitual clenching and grinding, nail biting and severe gum diseases. However; laminate veneers can be used after eliminating these existing problems.
Crown and bridges
Crowns are needed when the tooth is badly damaged either by trauma or decay. Also, in the instance of a Root Canal Treatment, a crown needs to be done to protect the tooth.
Significantly stronger than normal fillings, Inlays and Onlays, crowns protect teeth that otherwise may eventually break and become untreatable. Crowns cover the entire tooth surface and are made of Full Porcelain, Zirconia or Porcelain over Metal. With advances in materials and techniques, crowns can give you the strength, beauty and translucency of a natural tooth.
Dentures
With the loss of multiple teeth and as the aging process sets in, you may experience not only the loss of the ability to chew, you will lose the confidence to smile too. Further loss of facial muscle support and tone may cause your face to look ‘saggy’ and old. Speech may also be affect due to spaces formed in the gaps of missing teeth especially if they are in front.
Dentures can restore all these problems for you. Often used together with implant therapy, Dentures users today can enjoy their food, smile and laugh confidently without fear of them breaking or coming loose.
Pediatric Dentistry
Pediatric dentists are dedicated to the oral health of children from infancy through the teen years. They have the experience and qualifications to care for a child’s teeth, gums, and mouth throughout the various stages of childhood.
Children begin to get their baby teeth during the first 6 months of life. By age 6 or 7 years, they start to lose their first set of teeth, which eventually are replaced by secondary, permanent teeth. Without proper dental care, children face possible oral decay and disease that can cause a lifetime of pain and complications. Today, early childhood dental caries an infectious diseaseis 5 times more common in children than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever.
Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is the least invasive of all dental cosmetic treatments. It is safe, fast and inexpensive; an effective way to brighten natural teeth discoloured or stained by age or chemical. Most patients can expect to brighten their teeth by 8 to 10 shades after the whitening procedure.
While safe, some individuals do experience some degree of transient tooth sensitivity; this can however be managed by your dentist.
